Making the choice between safety in the home and security can be a difficult decision. You have to balance the dangers presented by self defense products themselves and the risk of being defenseless.
Many people feel safe and secure in the fact that they have a gun(s) in the home. The reality is that most homeowners with children have the firearms secured in a safe or other locked unit. Therein lies the problem. If an intruder enters your home and you are not tactically trained – you will panic and possibly freeze. Even if you manage to get to where the guns are stored, you will fumble the combination or drop the key (if you can get to it). Remember you probably have an intruder right behind you.
You cannot afford to be exposed in that situation. You need accessibility to your defense tool. Taser and/or stun guns can be kept in easily reached (unlocked) locations. To date, and of last research, no children, or anyone else for that matter, accidentally killed themselves with a Taser. The Taser can be left in a kitchen cabinet, cupboard, or on a self – easily reached in the event of an emergency. Even if you are in direct contact with an intruder, having a Taser or stun gun nearby can make the difference between life and death. That said, you should have several weapons positioned around the home. Pepper spray, Tasers, stun guns and firearms distributed in strategic locations will ensure that you can reach something quickly.
You should ensure that your latch key kids know where to reach a device that can defend them. To date, and of last research, no children, or anyone else for that matter, accidentally killed themselves with a Taser. If this concerns you then you should remove all knives, forks, glue, prescription pills and household cleaners from the house.
Just as your first consideration in a security plan is getting out in the event of a fire or break-in, your first concern in self defense equipment is protecting your family from the very weapons designed to save them. Guns kill or maim the person in front of the muzzle regardless of intent.
Do not rely just on a firearm – have multiple backup options in place.
